Tigers Maul Hapless Bruins (1/31/25)

So much for the new look Boston Bruins that coach Art Ross put together earlier this month. After beating Montreal the Bruins have now lost 5 in a row and reverted back to the team that was getting shelled almost every game. This time it was the Hamilton Tigers that dominated the Bruins for EIGHT goals. Alex McKinnon and Red Green both had two goals apiece as Boston's backup goalie Howard Lockhart got shelled. Jimmy Herbert, Herb Mitchell and Stan Jackson scored for the Bruins but it wasn't enough as the Tigers won 8-3 at Barton Street Arena.

It actually was an evenly matched first period although Hamilton scored first. With 6:50 left in the first Alex McKinnon walked in alone and scored on Bruins backup goalie Howard Lockhart to put the Tigers in the lead. The Bruins responded just over a minute later when Jimmy Herbert scored to tie the game. That's how the period ended, with a 1-1 tie.

Hamilton took control in the second period as Red Green set up Billy Burch for a goal just 5:10 into the period to put the Tigers back on top. The Tigers essentially iced the game when Bobby Benson was sent to the penalty box. On the powerplay, Ken Randall dished it to Green who scored to give Hamilton a two goal lead. The Bruins did manage to fight back when Stan Jackson scored with 50 seconds left in the period to cut the lead. The Bruins went into the third period trailing 3-2.

The floodgates opened in the third period as Shorty Green passed it to Ken Randall for a goal just 15 seconds into the period. Red Green scored again 5 minutes into the period then Alex McKinnon set up Shorty Green just over a minute later. Red Green passed it to McKinnon for another goal just 9:35 into the period. What a massacre! Herb Mitchell managed to score his first goal of the season with 7:50 left in the game but Hamilton had the last laugh when Randall scored just over a minute later. Mercifully the game ended shortly after with the Tigers winning 8-3.

Reaction:

Is this season over yet? Its become quite obvious this team isn't good enough to compete with the other teams in the NHL. They essentially have Jimmy Herbert, Lionel Hitchman and maybe Doc Stewart that you'd want to keep going into next year. Carson Cooper has been hurt almost all season and he might make a difference if he were to come back. Coach Art Ross is just playing out the string at this point as Howard Lockhart was the goalie in this one. After losing 11 games in a row, this was their 6th loss in a row after the win in Montreal. Who knows if they'll ever win again this year. The Bruins look to snap their six game losing streak three nights from now against the Ottawa Senators. Let's see if Boston Arena will give them good luck for once.

Vezina, Canadiens Blank Bruins (1/27/25)

The miserable season rolls on for the expansion Boston Bruins as they've now lost their fifth straight game and 16th out of 18 games. This time it was a lack of defense and offense in a game not even close. Montreal Canadiens goalie Georges Vezina stoned the Bruins cold while his counterpart Doc Stewart couldn't stop a nosebleed. The game was essentially over in the first period when Billy Boucher, Sylvio Mantha and Howie Morenz scored to put the Canadiens up 3-0 with just over 6 minutes remaining. Old friend Fern Headley laughed at his former team as he assisted Morenz on his second goal of the game in the third period. It all added up to yet another defeat, this time by the Canadiens at the Boston Arena.

The game was pretty much over right away when Howie Morenz dumped a pass to Billy Boucher who scored on Doc Stewart to put the Canadiens on top 2:56 into the first period. Just under ten minutes later Sylvio Mantha came in all alone and scored to essentially ice the game early. One minute after that, Aurele Joliat set up Morenz for a goal to increase the lead. That was it for the period and the game as the Canadiens led 3-0.

The good news for the Bruins was that they didn't allow a goal in the second period. Hitchman and Stewart combined to shut down the Canadiens. The bad news was Georges Vezina the Montreal goalie didn't allow a goal either. The game remained 3-0 heading into the third period.

Just like the first period, the third period belonged to the Canadiens. Vezina was a rock in net and Fern Headley probably felt relieved he was on the other side for once. With 8:19 left in the game, Headley himself set up Morenz for his second goal of the game to put the Bruins out of their misery. There weren't many penalties in the game, just one apiece. It all added up to a 4-0 shutout win for the Canadiens.

Who would of thought the Bruins would be THIS bad this season? Expansion teams are usually cucka as it is, but this has been a totally miserable season. They've lost 16 out of 18 games, there's really nothing else to say is there? They couldn't even score a goal against Vezina and the Canadiens let alone be competitive. Who knows what Art Ross can do to fix the situation. Not just this season but moving forward. Its one thing to have a bad expansion team that has some talent you can build on....how do you build on this? Hitchman and Herbert are good but that's about it. No sense ranting any further, the Bruins are 2-16 and there's still 12 games left in the season. The Bruins look to snap their four game losing streak four nights from now against the Hamilton Tigers. Let's see what happens at Barton Street Arena.

Bruins Lose Fourth Straight, St. Patrick's Win (1/24/25)

If you told me before the season the Boston Bruins would start their first year in franchise history losing 15 of 17 games I would have told you to take tickets to the Boston Arena and stick them in your hat. The Bruins have now lost four straight again, this time losing to the Toronto St. Patrick's. Bert Corbeau scored in the first period to give Toronto the lead but Jimmy Herbert scored with 5 seconds left to tie the game. The Bruins took the lead when Stan Jackson scored but Jack Adams scored on the powerplay to tie the game. Hap Day scored on the powerplay with 15 seconds left in the period to give Toronto the lead going into the third. The Bruins blew it on their powerplay in the third when Babe Dye scored a shorthanded goal although Herbert did score shortly after. Still, it wasn't enough as the St. Patrick's had won the game 4-3 at Mutual Street Arena.

The first period was back and forth until near the end of it. With 5:15 left Jack Adams set up Bert Corbeau who scored to give Toronto the lead. It looked like Toronto goalie Don Ross Roach was going to shut the Bruins out when Norm Shay set up Jimmy Herbert to score with 5 seconds left to tie the game 1-1.

The Bruins actually took the lead 3:30 into the second when Bobby Benson set up Stan Jackson to make it 2-1 Bruins. That was as good as it got as Jack Adams scored a powerplay goal with 4 minutes left in the period and Hap Day scored another powerplay goal with 15 seconds left to give the St. Patrick's a 3-2 lead going into the third.

In typical Bruins fashion, they bungled the third period. They went on the powerplay but Day found Babe Dye for a shorthanded goal as the St. Patrick's laughed at the Bruins. Herbert did manage to score on the powerplay assisted by Lionel Hitchman but the damage was done. Both goalies bore down the rest of the way, but that meant the Bruins lost 4-3 to the St. Patrick's.

Reaction:

This is getting ridiculous. The Bruins seem to invent new ways to lose. Giving up a backbreaking shorthanded goal before scoring on the powerplay anyway is ineptitude on a whole new level. Once again the talent level between the two teams is appalling as Babe Dye has twice as many goals as Jimmy Herbert. Essentially the Bruins are who they are for the rest of the season so coach Art Ross has his work cut out for him in the off-season. They need playmakers that can score for sure. Hitchman has been great on defense but they're gonna need more. Three nights from now the Bruins look to snap their four game losing streak at home against the Montreal Canadiens. Can they beat the Canadiens at the Boston Arena? Let's hope so.

Benedict, Maroons Blank Bruins (1/20/25)

Another game, another loss for the Boston Bruins. Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons outdueled Doc Stewart of the Bruins in a wonderfully played defensive game. Unfortunately the name of the game is offense and the Bruins simply don't have enough of it. Reg Noble scored for the Maroons in the first period and Sam Rotschild scored a powerplay goal in the second period for pretty much the only offense of the game. The Bruins have scored just two goals in the previous two games and have now lost three games in a row including this one 2-0 at the Montreal Forum.

The Maroons struck first in the first period 12:14 into it. Reg Noble scored for the Maroons to put the Bruins behind again. Doc Stewart and Clint Benedict then went mano e mano as both defenses played shutdown D the rest of the period. The bad news was the B's were behind but the good news is they only trailed 1-0 going into the second period.

In the second period Montreal struck again, this time on the powerplay. 8 minutes into the period Ganton Scott dished it to Sam Rothschild who scored to make it 2-0 Montreal. Once again Stewart bore down to not allow another goal but Benedict was just a bit better. Going into intermission Montreal still had a 2-0 lead.

The third period was a total deadlock. Both the Bruins and the Maroons defense stepped up to not allow a single goal. Unfortunately for the Bruins, that meant they put up a goose egg in this one. Clint Benedict pitched a shutout as the Maroons blanked the Bruins 2-0.

Reaction:

Well Art Ross has his work cut out for him in the off-season. Defensively he's got some answers with Hitchman, Benson and Redding with Stewart in net. Now he needs to find guys that can score. They're gonna need some playmakers on offense and it'll take some scouting by Ross to get that done. This game was a prime example as they allowed just two goals but couldn't score any of their own. Simply Jimmy Herbert by himself is not going to be enough in this league. Trading Smokey Harris and Carson Cooper getting hurt didn't help, but they have to do SOMETHING to get guys that can put the puck in the net. The loss now drops the Bruins to 2-14 on the season with just 14 games left. Four nights from now the Bruins look to snap their 3 game losing streak against the Toronto St. Patrick's at Mutual Street Arena.

Senators Beat Bruins Late (1/17/25)

The Bruins made a peculiar roster move three days ago. They "loaned" Fern Headley to the Montreal Canadiens for the rest of the season yet retain his rights. Art Ross figures the Bruins are going nowhere this season so may as well give Headley a chance to win with Montreal.

Another game, another loss for the Boston Bruins. Not only are they having trouble scoring goals but for the second game in a row they were done in by a lack of offense. The Ottawa Senators scored first three minutes into the game courtesy of King Clancy. Less than two minutes later Jimmy Herbert tied it for the Bruins. In the second period Cy Denneny scored to put the Senators ahead but Stan Jackson scored to tie the game. Denneny scored again with four minutes left in the second period and that ended up being the final score. Neither team scored in the third and Ottawa was victorious 3-2 at the Ottawa Auditorium.

It took just three minutes and twenty seconds for Ottawa to get a lead against the Bruins in the first period. King Clancy walked in alone and banged in the puck to put Ottawa on top just like that. Less than two minutes later the Bruins responded. Jimmy Herbert took a pass from Billy Stuart and tucked it past Ottawa goalie Alec Connell to tie the game. That was it for the first period with the game tied 1-1.

The second period was back and forth but 2:30 into the period Hooley Smith passed it to King Clancy who spotted Cy Denneny streaking toward the net. Cy stuffed it to give the Senators the lead back. Just over two minutes later Stan Jackson of all people fired it past Connell to tie the game. With four minutes left in the second period, Smith once again found Denneny who scored to give the Senators the lead. That was it for the second period with the Senators ahead 3-2.

The third period was a parade to the penalty box but neither team could capitalize on their respective power plays. Doc Stewart and Alec Connell had a duel for the ages with neither team allowing goals. Unfortunately for the Bruins, that meant the game ended with the Senators winning 3-2.

Reaction:

Once again the lack of a true playmaker hurts the Bruins as they fall short in another close game. Art Ross fixed the early season defensive woes but now they don't have a sniper like a Denneny or a Babe Dye to get the clutch goals to win the game. The Bruins have played 15 games and have lost 13 of them, not good at all. The good news is the season is halfway over, bad news is there's still another half a season of losses to come. At least the games have been competitive lately, maybe they'll win the next one if its as close as this one. The Bruins have a game against the Montreal Maroons three nights from now at the Boston Arena. Hope they can win that one.

Bruins Fall To Hamilton Again (1/12/25)

So much for the Boston Bruins momentum after making trades and winning a game. The new look Bruins still can't beat the Hamilton Tigers as Hamilton rallied from a two goal deficit to win going away. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Lionel Hitchman and George Redding, but Hamilton tied the game in the second period on goals by Alex McKinnon and Billy Burch. In the third period the Tigers put the game away with goals from Mickey Roach & another by Burch. The Bruins lack off offense is starting to rear its ugly head as the Tigers had won it 4-2 at the Boston Arena.

The first period belonged to the Bruins although they couldn't take advantage of a penalty to Jesse Spring. Still, halfway through the period Bernie Morris set up Lionel Hitchman for his first goal as a Boston Bruin. Five minutes later, Jimmy Herbert dished a pass to George Redding who scored to make it 2-0 with 5 minutes left in the period. Doc Stewart held the fort and the Bruins led 2-0 going into the break.

The switch was flipped as Hamilton dominated the Bruins the rest of the way. Just 1:21 into the second period Red Green dished a pass to Alex McKinnon who scored to cut the lead just like that. With 8:40 left in the period Billy Burch walked in alone and scored to tie the game. That's how the score ended with the game tied 2-2 going into the third.

Halfway through the third period Hamilton took the lead when Jesse Spring found Mickey Roach in front for the go-ahead goal. With 4:32 left in the game, Roach dished it to Burch who scored his 13th goal of the season for the dagger. That was it as the Tigers had won the game 4-2.

Its become quite obvious that coach Art Ross sacrificed offense for defense and now they're stuck without a sniper. Other teams have guys like Burch, Babe Dye and Cy Denneny but the Bruins have Jimmy Herbert and that's about it. Trading Smokey Harris and losing Carson Cooper to injury hurt the Bruins offensively and they're not going to be able to recover from this. They can fix it in the off-season but for now the Bruins are going to have to win games on pure defense. Benson and Hitchman help and Doc Stewart is an upgrade over Hec Fowler but they're going to need more offense. They had the lead in this one but four straight unanswered goals by Hamilton proved to be the dagger. Its a shame that Boston lost 12 of their first 14 games because even a .500 record would have them closer to the playoffs then completely hopeless. All Ross can do is try to win as many games as he can from here on in. The Bruins try to bounce back in five days against the Ottawa Senators. Let's see if the Bruins can win in the Ottawa Auditorium.

Bruins Snap Streak, Bet Canadiens (1/10/25)

The rumor of Boston Bruins coach Art Ross making a trade turned out to be true. Yesterday Ross sent right winger Alf Skinner to the Montreal Maroons for defenseman Bobby Benson and right winger Bernie Morris. Benson and Morris were playing for the Calgary Tigers when they was sent to the Maroons....who flipped them to the Bruins. Today they sent a bag of cash to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Lionel Hitchman which actually might be a difference maker. Hitchman is a young up and coming defenseman so the Bruins might have actually gotten better.

As for the game, THE BRUINS FINALLY WIN ONE! Looks like the new players actually worked out as the Bruins stunned the Montreal Canadiens to snap their 11 game losing streak in overtime. The Canadiens struck first in the first period when Billy Boucher scored 3:05 into the period on a set up from Billy Coutu. This time it was the Bruins that owned the second period as Jimmy Herbert scored twice, once on the power play and the other on an assist by Bobby Benson. The Bruins thought they had the game won but Coutu scored with 50 seconds left in the third period to tie the game. A strange thing happened as Montreal took a penalty in overtime and Herbert found Bernie Morris for the game winning goal to win the game. The Bruins had won 3-2 in overtime over the Canadiens in Mount Royal Arena.

The Canadiens struck first in the first period to make it look like the Bruins were going to take their 12th straight loss. 3 minutes into the game Billy Coutu found Billy Boucher streaking to the net and Boucher scored to put the Bruins in a hole early again. At this point I wouldn't blame Art Ross just throwing a newspaper on the ice and walking out as the Bruins were down 1-0 going into the second period.

Somehow the second period belonged to the Bruins as Doc Stewart held the fort against the Canadiens. New Bruin Bobby Benson sent the puck to Jimmy Herbert who scored to tie the game 3:30 into the period. Suddenly a miracle happened, the Bruins got a lead! After Montreal took a penalty, Stan Jackson set up Herbert again who scored with 3:30 left in the period to put the Bruins on top. That was it for the period as the Bruins took a 2-1 lead into the third period.

The third period looked to have been all Boston with Stewart blocking shots left and right and the new Bruins seemingly gelling. But as usual trouble reared its ugly head. With fifty seconds left in the game, Billy Coutu walked in alone and scored to tie the game. The game went into overtime with the game tied 2-2.

So that's how its going to end right? The Canadiens score in overtime and they win, right? WRONG! Somehow on their home ice they took a penalty to put the Bruins on the powerplay. Herbert then found Bernie Morris who put it past goalie Georges Vezina to give the Bruins the victory. The Bruins had won it 3-2 in overtime.

Reaction:

Things are looking up already for the new look Bruins. Benson & Morris were instrumental in the victory on the offensive side and Hitchman helped on the other end to hold the Canadiens to just two goals in regulation. Its only one game but its better than what they've done pretty much all season. They're still going to need offensive help moving forward but for one game the defense stepped up. Now the question is can they maintain the momentum? Two nights from now the Bruins take on the Hamilton Tigers at the Boston Arena. Hopefully they can bring the same effort they did tonight at that game.
