Tigers Maul Hapless Bruins (1/31/25)

So much for the new look Boston Bruins that coach Art Ross put together earlier this month. After beating Montreal the Bruins have now lost 5 in a row and reverted back to the team that was getting shelled almost every game. This time it was the Hamilton Tigers that dominated the Bruins for EIGHT goals. Alex McKinnon and Red Green both had two goals apiece as Boston's backup goalie Howard Lockhart got shelled. Jimmy Herbert, Herb Mitchell and Stan Jackson scored for the Bruins but it wasn't enough as the Tigers won 8-3 at Barton Street Arena.
                                                              Sorry Howard

It actually was an evenly matched first period although Hamilton scored first. With 6:50 left in the first Alex McKinnon walked in alone and scored on Bruins backup goalie Howard Lockhart to put the Tigers in the lead. The Bruins responded just over a minute later when Jimmy Herbert scored to tie the game. That's how the period ended, with a 1-1 tie.
The lone bright spot this season

Hamilton took control in the second period as Red Green set up Billy Burch for a goal just 5:10 into the period to put the Tigers back on top. The Tigers essentially iced the game when Bobby Benson was sent to the penalty box. On the powerplay, Ken Randall dished it to Green who scored to give Hamilton a two goal lead. The Bruins did manage to fight back when Stan Jackson scored with 50 seconds left in the period to cut the lead. The Bruins went into the third period trailing 3-2.
                                                                   Jackson keeps it close

The floodgates opened in the third period as Shorty Green passed it to Ken Randall for a goal just 15 seconds into the period. Red Green scored again 5 minutes into the period then Alex McKinnon set up Shorty Green just over a minute later. Red Green passed it to McKinnon for another goal just 9:35 into the period. What a massacre! Herb Mitchell managed to score his first goal of the season with 7:50 left in the game but Hamilton had the last laugh when Randall scored just over a minute later. Mercifully the game ended shortly after with the Tigers winning 8-3.
                                                            "We sucked tonight!" - Mitchell

Penalties:

Bobby Benson - 4 minutes

Stan Jackson - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Is this season over yet? Its become quite obvious this team isn't good enough to compete with the other teams in the NHL. They essentially have Jimmy Herbert, Lionel Hitchman and maybe Doc Stewart that you'd want to keep going into next year. Carson Cooper has been hurt almost all season and he might make a difference if he were to come back. Coach Art Ross is just playing out the string at this point as Howard Lockhart was the goalie in this one. After losing 11 games in a row, this was their 6th loss in a row after the win in Montreal. Who knows if they'll ever win again this year. The Bruins look to snap their six game losing streak three nights from now against the Ottawa Senators. Let's see if Boston Arena will give them good luck for once.

Vezina, Canadiens Blank Bruins (1/27/25)

The miserable season rolls on for the expansion Boston Bruins as they've now lost their fifth straight game and 16th out of 18 games. This time it was a lack of defense and offense in a game not even close. Montreal Canadiens goalie Georges Vezina stoned the Bruins cold while his counterpart Doc Stewart couldn't stop a nosebleed. The game was essentially over in the first period when Billy Boucher, Sylvio Mantha and Howie Morenz scored to put the Canadiens up 3-0 with just over 6 minutes remaining. Old friend Fern Headley laughed at his former team as he assisted Morenz on his second goal of the game in the third period. It all added up to yet another defeat, this time by the Canadiens at the Boston Arena.
Noted fiddle player Louis Feinberg laughs at the Bruins

The game was pretty much over right away when Howie Morenz dumped a pass to Billy Boucher who scored on Doc Stewart to put the Canadiens on top 2:56 into the first period. Just under ten minutes later Sylvio Mantha came in all alone and scored to essentially ice the game early. One minute after that, Aurele Joliat set up Morenz for a goal to increase the lead. That was it for the period and the game as the Canadiens led 3-0.
                                                              Morenz tortures the Bruins

The good news for the Bruins was that they didn't allow a goal in the second period. Hitchman and Stewart combined to shut down the Canadiens. The bad news was Georges Vezina the Montreal goalie didn't allow a goal either. The game remained 3-0 heading into the third period.
"Can you guys score?" - Stewart

Just like the first period, the third period belonged to the Canadiens. Vezina was a rock in net and Fern Headley probably felt relieved he was on the other side for once. With 8:19 left in the game, Headley himself set up Morenz for his second goal of the game to put the Bruins out of their misery. There weren't many penalties in the game, just one apiece. It all added up to a 4-0 shutout win for the Canadiens.
"You get nothing and like it!" - Vezina

Penalties:

Lionel Hitchman - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Who would of thought the Bruins would be THIS bad this season? Expansion teams are usually cucka as it is, but this has been a totally miserable season. They've lost 16 out of 18 games, there's really nothing else to say is there? They couldn't even score a goal against Vezina and the Canadiens let alone be competitive. Who knows what Art Ross can do to fix the situation. Not just this season but moving forward. Its one thing to have a bad expansion team that has some talent you can build on....how do you build on this? Hitchman and Herbert are good but that's about it. No sense ranting any further, the Bruins are 2-16 and there's still 12 games left in the season. The Bruins look to snap their four game losing streak four nights from now against the Hamilton Tigers. Let's see what happens at Barton Street Arena.

Bruins Lose Fourth Straight, St. Patrick's Win (1/24/25)

If you told me before the season the Boston Bruins would start their first year in franchise history losing 15 of 17 games I would have told you to take tickets to the Boston Arena and stick them in your hat. The Bruins have now lost four straight again, this time losing to the Toronto St. Patrick's. Bert Corbeau scored in the first period to give Toronto the lead but Jimmy Herbert scored with 5 seconds left to tie the game. The Bruins took the lead when Stan Jackson scored but Jack Adams scored on the powerplay to tie the game. Hap Day scored on the powerplay with 15 seconds left in the period to give Toronto the lead going into the third. The Bruins blew it on their powerplay in the third when Babe Dye scored a shorthanded goal although Herbert did score shortly after. Still, it wasn't enough as the St. Patrick's had won the game 4-3 at Mutual Street Arena.
                                                                 Bruins can't beat Jack Adams

The first period was back and forth until near the end of it. With 5:15 left Jack Adams set up Bert Corbeau who scored to give Toronto the lead. It looked like Toronto goalie Don Ross Roach was going to shut the Bruins out when Norm Shay set up Jimmy Herbert to score with 5 seconds left to tie the game 1-1.
                                                       Damn Corbeau

The Bruins actually took the lead 3:30 into the second when Bobby Benson set up Stan Jackson to make it 2-1 Bruins. That was as good as it got as Jack Adams scored a powerplay goal with 4 minutes left in the period and Hap Day scored another powerplay goal with 15 seconds left to give the St. Patrick's a 3-2 lead going into the third.
                                                         Day with the go-ahead goal

In typical Bruins fashion, they bungled the third period. They went on the powerplay but Day found Babe Dye for a shorthanded goal as the St. Patrick's laughed at the Bruins. Herbert did manage to score on the powerplay assisted by Lionel Hitchman but the damage was done. Both goalies bore down the rest of the way, but that meant the Bruins lost 4-3 to the St. Patrick's.
Hitchman did the best he could

Penalties:

Jimmy Herbert - 2 minutes

Lionel Hitchman - 4 minutes

Stan Jackson - 4 minutes

Herb Mitchell - 7 minutes

Reaction:

This is getting ridiculous. The Bruins seem to invent new ways to lose. Giving up a backbreaking shorthanded goal before scoring on the powerplay anyway is ineptitude on a whole new level. Once again the talent level between the two teams is appalling as Babe Dye has twice as many goals as Jimmy Herbert. Essentially the Bruins are who they are for the rest of the season so coach Art Ross has his work cut out for him in the off-season. They need playmakers that can score for sure. Hitchman has been great on defense but they're gonna need more. Three nights from now the Bruins look to snap their four game losing streak at home against the Montreal Canadiens. Can they beat the Canadiens at the Boston Arena? Let's hope so.

Benedict, Maroons Blank Bruins (1/20/25)

Another game, another loss for the Boston Bruins. Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons outdueled Doc Stewart of the Bruins in a wonderfully played defensive game. Unfortunately the name of the game is offense and the Bruins simply don't have enough of it. Reg Noble scored for the Maroons in the first period and Sam Rotschild scored a powerplay goal in the second period for pretty much the only offense of the game. The Bruins have scored just two goals in the previous two games and have now lost three games in a row including this one 2-0 at the Montreal Forum.
Jess Willard is disgusted with the Bruins

The Maroons struck first in the first period 12:14 into it. Reg Noble scored for the Maroons to put the Bruins behind again. Doc Stewart and Clint Benedict then went mano e mano as both defenses played shutdown D the rest of the period. The bad news was the B's were behind but the good news is they only trailed 1-0 going into the second period.
Noble puts the Maroons on top

In the second period Montreal struck again, this time on the powerplay. 8 minutes into the period Ganton Scott dished it to Sam Rothschild who scored to make it 2-0 Montreal. Once again Stewart bore down to not allow another goal but Benedict was just a bit better. Going into intermission Montreal still had a 2-0 lead.
                                                                Rothschild scores

The third period was a total deadlock. Both the Bruins and the Maroons defense stepped up to not allow a single goal. Unfortunately for the Bruins, that meant they put up a goose egg in this one. Clint Benedict pitched a shutout as the Maroons blanked the Bruins 2-0.
                                                             Bruins lose to this guy

Penalties:

Jimmy Herbert - 4 minutes

Stan Jackson - 2 minutes

George Redding - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Well Art Ross has his work cut out for him in the off-season. Defensively he's got some answers with Hitchman, Benson and Redding with Stewart in net. Now he needs to find guys that can score. They're gonna need some playmakers on offense and it'll take some scouting by Ross to get that done. This game was a prime example as they allowed just two goals but couldn't score any of their own. Simply Jimmy Herbert by himself is not going to be enough in this league. Trading Smokey Harris and Carson Cooper getting hurt didn't help, but they have to do SOMETHING to get guys that can put the puck in the net. The loss now drops the Bruins to 2-14 on the season with just 14 games left. Four nights from now the Bruins look to snap their 3 game losing streak against the Toronto St. Patrick's at Mutual Street Arena.

Senators Beat Bruins Late (1/17/25)

The Bruins made a peculiar roster move three days ago. They "loaned" Fern Headley to the Montreal Canadiens for the rest of the season yet retain his rights. Art Ross figures the Bruins are going nowhere this season so may as well give Headley a chance to win with Montreal.
                                                         Bye bye Headley

Another game, another loss for the Boston Bruins. Not only are they having trouble scoring goals but for the second game in a row they were done in by a lack of offense. The Ottawa Senators scored first three minutes into the game courtesy of King Clancy. Less than two minutes later Jimmy Herbert tied it for the Bruins. In the second period Cy Denneny scored to put the Senators ahead but Stan Jackson scored to tie the game. Denneny scored again with four minutes left in the second period and that ended up being the final score. Neither team scored in the third and Ottawa was victorious 3-2 at the Ottawa Auditorium.
"Are we ever gonna win again?" - Art Ross

It took just three minutes and twenty seconds for Ottawa to get a lead against the Bruins in the first period. King Clancy walked in alone and banged in the puck to put Ottawa on top just like that. Less than two minutes later the Bruins responded. Jimmy Herbert took a pass from Billy Stuart and tucked it past Ottawa goalie Alec Connell to tie the game. That was it for the first period with the game tied 1-1.
                                                                 Herbert ties it up

The second period was back and forth but 2:30 into the period Hooley Smith passed it to King Clancy who spotted Cy Denneny streaking toward the net. Cy stuffed it to give the Senators the lead back. Just over two minutes later Stan Jackson of all people fired it past Connell to tie the game. With four minutes left in the second period, Smith once again found Denneny who scored to give the Senators the lead. That was it for the second period with the Senators ahead 3-2.

The third period was a parade to the penalty box but neither team could capitalize on their respective power plays. Doc Stewart and Alec Connell had a duel for the ages with neither team allowing goals. Unfortunately for the Bruins, that meant the game ended with the Senators winning 3-2.

Penalties:

Billy Stuart - 5 minutes

Norm Shay - 4 minutes

Stan Jackson - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Once again the lack of a true playmaker hurts the Bruins as they fall short in another close game. Art Ross fixed the early season defensive woes but now they don't have a sniper like a Denneny or a Babe Dye to get the clutch goals to win the game. The Bruins have played 15 games and have lost 13 of them, not good at all. The good news is the season is halfway over, bad news is there's still another half a season of losses to come. At least the games have been competitive lately, maybe they'll win the next one if its as close as this one. The Bruins have a game against the Montreal Maroons three nights from now at the Boston Arena. Hope they can win that one.

Bruins Fall To Hamilton Again (1/12/25)

So much for the Boston Bruins momentum after making trades and winning a game. The new look Bruins still can't beat the Hamilton Tigers as Hamilton rallied from a two goal deficit to win going away. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Lionel Hitchman and George Redding, but Hamilton tied the game in the second period on goals by Alex McKinnon and Billy Burch. In the third period the Tigers put the game away with goals from Mickey Roach & another by Burch. The Bruins lack off offense is starting to rear its ugly head as the Tigers had won it 4-2 at the Boston Arena.
"You can't beat me" - Burch

The first period belonged to the Bruins although they couldn't take advantage of a penalty to Jesse Spring. Still, halfway through the period Bernie Morris set up Lionel Hitchman for his first goal as a Boston Bruin. Five minutes later, Jimmy Herbert dished a pass to George Redding who scored to make it 2-0 with 5 minutes left in the period. Doc Stewart held the fort and the Bruins led 2-0 going into the break.
                                                           First Bruins goal for Hitchman

The switch was flipped as Hamilton dominated the Bruins the rest of the way. Just 1:21 into the second period Red Green dished a pass to Alex McKinnon who scored to cut the lead just like that. With 8:40 left in the period Billy Burch walked in alone and scored to tie the game. That's how the score ended with the game tied 2-2 going into the third.

Halfway through the third period Hamilton took the lead when Jesse Spring found Mickey Roach in front for the go-ahead goal. With 4:32 left in the game, Roach dished it to Burch who scored his 13th goal of the season for the dagger. That was it as the Tigers had won the game 4-2.

Penalties:

Jimmy Herbert - 2 minutes

Herb Mitchell - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Its become quite obvious that coach Art Ross sacrificed offense for defense and now they're stuck without a sniper. Other teams have guys like Burch, Babe Dye and Cy Denneny but the Bruins have Jimmy Herbert and that's about it. Trading Smokey Harris and losing Carson Cooper to injury hurt the Bruins offensively and they're not going to be able to recover from this. They can fix it in the off-season but for now the Bruins are going to have to win games on pure defense. Benson and Hitchman help and Doc Stewart is an upgrade over Hec Fowler but they're going to need more offense. They had the lead in this one but four straight unanswered goals by Hamilton proved to be the dagger. Its a shame that Boston lost 12 of their first 14 games because even a .500 record would have them closer to the playoffs then completely hopeless. All Ross can do is try to win as many games as he can from here on in. The Bruins try to bounce back in five days against the Ottawa Senators. Let's see if the Bruins can win in the Ottawa Auditorium.

Bruins Snap Streak, Bet Canadiens (1/10/25)

The rumor of Boston Bruins coach Art Ross making a trade turned out to be true. Yesterday Ross sent right winger Alf Skinner to the Montreal Maroons for defenseman Bobby Benson and right winger Bernie Morris. Benson and Morris were playing for the Calgary Tigers when they was sent to the Maroons....who flipped them to the Bruins. Today they sent a bag of cash to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Lionel Hitchman which actually might be a difference maker. Hitchman is a young up and coming defenseman so the Bruins might have actually gotten better.
                                                                      Bye bye Skinner
Good luck, you're gonna need it

As for the game, THE BRUINS FINALLY WIN ONE! Looks like the new players actually worked out as the Bruins stunned the Montreal Canadiens to snap their 11 game losing streak in overtime. The Canadiens struck first in the first period when Billy Boucher scored 3:05 into the period on a set up from Billy Coutu. This time it was the Bruins that owned the second period as Jimmy Herbert scored twice, once on the power play and the other on an assist by Bobby Benson. The Bruins thought they had the game won but Coutu scored with 50 seconds left in the third period to tie the game. A strange thing happened as Montreal took a penalty in overtime and Herbert found Bernie Morris for the game winning goal to win the game. The Bruins had won 3-2 in overtime over the Canadiens in Mount Royal Arena.
Howard Ehmke approves of the win

The Canadiens struck first in the first period to make it look like the Bruins were going to take their 12th straight loss. 3 minutes into the game Billy Coutu found Billy Boucher streaking to the net and Boucher scored to put the Bruins in a hole early again. At this point I wouldn't blame Art Ross just throwing a newspaper on the ice and walking out as the Bruins were down 1-0 going into the second period.
                                                            Boucher scores

Somehow the second period belonged to the Bruins as Doc Stewart held the fort against the Canadiens. New Bruin Bobby Benson sent the puck to Jimmy Herbert who scored to tie the game 3:30 into the period. Suddenly a miracle happened, the Bruins got a lead! After Montreal took a penalty, Stan Jackson set up Herbert again who scored with 3:30 left in the period to put the Bruins on top. That was it for the period as the Bruins took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
                                                         Herbert puts Boston on top

The third period looked to have been all Boston with Stewart blocking shots left and right and the new Bruins seemingly gelling. But as usual trouble reared its ugly head. With fifty seconds left in the game, Billy Coutu walked in alone and scored to tie the game. The game went into overtime with the game tied 2-2.
                                                           Coutu sends it to overtime

So that's how its going to end right? The Canadiens score in overtime and they win, right? WRONG! Somehow on their home ice they took a penalty to put the Bruins on the powerplay. Herbert then found Bernie Morris who put it past goalie Georges Vezina to give the Bruins the victory. The Bruins had won it 3-2 in overtime.
                                                       "We lost???" - Vezina

Penalties:

Stan Jackson - 2 minutes

Herb Mitchell - 2 minutes

George Redding - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Things are looking up already for the new look Bruins. Benson & Morris were instrumental in the victory on the offensive side and Hitchman helped on the other end to hold the Canadiens to just two goals in regulation. Its only one game but its better than what they've done pretty much all season. They're still going to need offensive help moving forward but for one game the defense stepped up. Now the question is can they maintain the momentum? Two nights from now the Bruins take on the Hamilton Tigers at the Boston Arena. Hopefully they can bring the same effort they did tonight at that game.

Bruins Lose Eleventh Straight Game (1/5/25)

Now its just getting ridiculous as the Boston Bruins have now lost eleven straight games and second consecutive by just one goal. This time it was the Toronto St. Patrick's that did the damage. Toronto's Jack Adams opened the scoring four minutes into the second period but Jimmy Herbert tied the game just over a minute later. Babe Dye and Albert Holway also scored to put the St. Patrick's up 3-1. In the final period, somehow George Redding scored a shorthanded goal with 2:22 left but couldn't get another past goalie John Ross Roach. It all added up to their eleventh straight loss 3-2 at Boston Arena.
Not even Virgil Earp can help this team

Doc Stewart put on a clinic in the first period although there was once again another steady parade to the penalty box pretty much all game. Jimmy Herbert, Stan Jackson and Alf Skinner all spent time in the box in this one although the first period ended 0-0.

Then everything fell apart in the second period as usual. Bert Corbeau set up Jack Adams to score the first goal of the game 4:17 into the period. Fortunately the Bruins didn't go quietly as Jimmy Herbert scored his sixth goal of the season a little over a minute later to tie the game. Toronto then surged ahead as Babe Dye pumped in his 17th goal of the season 9:29 into the period and he then set up Albert Holway with just over seven minutes left in the period to ice the game. The Bruins went into the break down 3-1.

The third period belonged to the Bruins as Doc Stewart stoned the St. Patrick's cold the entire period. Its a shame because Stewart gave Toronto nothing in the first and third period. The Bruins looked to have a comeback in the making when Fern Headley set up George Redding on a shorthanded goal with 2:22 left in the game. Unfortunately, Toronto goalie John Ross Roach didn't allow a goal the rest of the game and helped the St. Patrick's win 3-2.
                                                              "We win" - JRR

Penalties:

Jimmy Herbert - 4 minutes

Stan Jackson - 4 minutes

Alf Skinner - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Is the season over yet? The Bruins may not win another game at this rate. The talent gap between the other five teams in the league and them is frightening. Babe Dye has more than twice as many goals as Jimmy Herbert and that's just on the St. Patrick's. There's not much Ross can do to turn the ship around this season so he better have a great off-season coming up. The Bruins have at least been competitive lately but just can't get over the hump offensively. The sooner this year comes to an end, the better. The rumors or swirling Art Ross is about to make a trade according to the Boston Globe. Let's see how that turns out. As it is, the Bruins now travel to Montreal to take on the Canadiens five days from now. Good luck winning in Mount Royal Arena.

Bruins Rally Falls Short In Montreal (1/3/25)

Make it 10 losses in a row for the Boston Bruins in a season that unraveled very quickly. At least this game was entertaining as the Bruins rallied from a 3-0 deficit in dramatic fashion. The Montreal Maroons broke out to an early lead thanks to a Louis Berlinguette goal 6 minutes into the first period. Reg Noble and Sam Rothschild scored in the second period to seemingly put the game on ice. Not so fast! Jimmy Herbert scored 8:50 into the second period, George Redding scored 7:40 into the third period and Herbert scored again halfway through the third period to tie the game. Too bad less than a minute later Francis Cain scored to put the Maroons back on top. Montreal goalie Clint Benedict held the fort and the Maroons handed the Bruins their tenth straight loss with a 4-3 win at the Montreal Forum.
"Close but no cigar!" - Berlinguette

The Maroons scored first when Louis Berlinguette was set up by Gerry Munro six minutes into the first period. Shockingly, Doc Stewart and the Bruins held fast although there was a steady parade to the penalty box in this one. Jimmy Herbert and Herb Mitchell spent plenty of time in there as the Bruins ended the first period down 1-0.
Stay out of the box, Mitchell!

The Maroons looked to have put the game away early when just three minutes into the second period, Reg Noble scored to make it 2-0. Two minutes later Punch Broadbent found Sam Rothschild alone in front of the net to make it 3-0. Time to pack it in, right? WRONG! Jimmy Herbert scored 8:50 into the period to cut the lead. Again Doc Stewart held pat and the Bruins went into the third period down 3-1.
"Its not over yet!" - Herbert

The Bruins rallied in the third period as Fern Headley set up George Redding 7:40 into it and Herbert scored again 10:40 into the period to tie the game just like that. Unfortunately the euphoria was short lived as Francis Cain scored less than a minute later to put Montreal up for good. Maroons goalie Clint Benedict bore down the rest of the way and the Bruins failed to score. The Maroons had held on to win 4-3.
                                                      "THAT'S GOTTA BE CAIN!"

Penalties:

Jimmy Herbert - 8 minutes

Herb Mitchell - 7 minutes

Billy Stuart - 5 minutes

Reaction:

Another sucker punch to the gonads and yet another loss in a year full of them. There's not much Art Ross can do at this point as his team is simply not good enough to compete with the other teams in the NHL that have been established for years now. Maybe he can make a trade or two but otherwise this season is down the drain. Ten straight losses is embarrassing and the sad part is the season is only 1/3 over. Owner Charles Adams can't be happy about this. The rumor is Art Ross is about to make another trade so let's see what he has in store. They can't be any worse than they already are....right? Two nights from now the Bruins return home to face the Toronto St. Patrick's. Good grief.

Senators Hand Bruins Ninth Straight Loss (1/1/25)

Its a new year but the same old Boston Bruins as they dropped their ninth straight game in another defensive breakdown against the Ottawa Senators. Cy Denneny and Hooley Smith added two goals apiece and King Clancy got in on the action as the Senators put five goals up against Doc Stewart and the Bruins. Boston did try to fight back with goals from Jimmy Herbert and Billy Stuart but it wasn't nearly enough. Boston also didn't help themselves by taking six of the eight penalties called during the game. It all added up to a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Senators at the Ottawa Auditorium.
                                                       Nope, Bruins still can't win

Penalties hurt the Bruins as they couldn't stay on even strength throughout the game and the Senators made them pay.  Cy Denneny was set up by Frank Nighbor just 2:20 into the game to put the Bruins behind again. To add insult to injury, Denneny was assisted by Nighbor with just 40 seconds left in the period to send Boston into intermission down 2-0 again.
                                                That damn Denneny again

The Bruins did give themselves a glimmer of hope to start the second period believe it or not. Jimmy Herbert scored his third goal of the season 2:45 into the period to cut the lead in half. Unfortunately they couldn't keep up the momentum as Hooley Smith scored eight minutes into the period to quell any hope of a comeback. The Bruins went into the break down 3-1 and pretty much out.
                                                                  Herbert keeps Boston in it

The third period was a death march for the Bruins as the Senators iced the game big time. King Clancy scored just 4:30 into the period to put the game out of reach just like that assisted by Smith. Smith himself scored with just four minutes remaining in the period set up by Denneny. Fortunately for the Bruins, Billy Stuart scored his fourth goal of the season to make the score a little bit more respectable. The Senators still won the game 5-2.
                                                     Unquestionably team MVP so far

What more can be said about this season other than its an unmitigated disaster? The season is 1/3 over and the Bruins have lost 9 out of the 10 games they've played. They're simply not good enough to hang with the other teams in the league that have been established for years. Expansion teams aren't meant to do well their first year but the Bruins have barely even been competitive. They've been blown away in 7 of the 10 games they've played and if it wasn't for Art Ross making a move or two, it would have been even worse. Ross may have to make more moves just to be even competitive because what they're doing now isn't going to draw fans. Still, its the first season so no sense going insane about it. Two nights from now the Bruins travel to Montreal to face the Maroons, the only team they've beaten so far this season. Hopefully they can win it in the Montreal Forum.

Tigers Edge Bruins at Boston Arena (12/29/24)

The bad news was the Boston Bruins lost their EIGHTH straight game but the good news was at least this game was competitive. The Hamilton Tigers came to town after beating the daylights out of the Bruins in Hamilton earlier this season but this game was much closer. I guess Art Ross is finally getting something going but it still wasn't enough. The Tigers were led by a stout defense and a great goalie effort by Jake Forbes. Meanwhile Doc Stewart did the best he could but the Tigers scored two goals within the first five minutes of the game. One by Shorty Green and the other by Mickey Roach. The Bruins did fight back when Billy Stuart scored with 6:10 remaining in the third period but Forbes bore down the rest of the way. The Tigers had beaten the Bruins 2-1 at the Boston Arena.
                                                               Forbes beats the Bruins

The Tigers wasted no time getting to the Bruins as Shorty Green scored just 2:20 into the game assisted by Mickey Roach. Just three minutes later it was Roach scoring assisted by Green. Just like that the Bruins were down 2-0 but the good news was Ross' boys didn't give up and stoned the Tigers cold after that second goal. They went into first intermission down 2-0.
                                                         Shorty Green puts Hamilton up

The second period was a stalemate but that showed the Bruins had definitely improved defensively. They couldn't score on Forbes but Stewart remained tough in the Bruins net as well. Unlike the previous games the damage didn't get any worse as the Tigers remained up 2-0 going into the break.
                                                       Roach's goal was the difference

The third period actually belonged to the Bruins as Billy Stuart remained Art Ross' best acquisition to date as he scored his third goal of the season 13:50 into it. The Bruins were one goal away from tying it up and they desperately peppered Forbes but to no avail. Unfortunately the Tigers held on to win a hard fought contest 2-1.
                                                             Stuart kept the game close

Penalties:

George Carroll - 5 minutes
Jimmy Herbert - 7 minutes
Herb Mitchell - 2 minutes
Alf Skinner - 7 minutes
Emory Sparrow - 2 minutes

Reaction:

Even though the Bruins lost, that's more like it. You can see the fight in this team, literally. Alf Skinner, Jimmy Herbert and George Carroll all got into scraps with the Hamilton Tigers and the defense held them to nothing after the first period. Stuart scoring in the first period gave the Bruins their first chance to win a game since the first week of the season but it wasn't meant to be. They may not have won the game but the desire was there. Bruins coach Art Ross can definitely work with that kind of effort, they just need more firepower. Hopefully Carson Cooper will be back soon or Ross can make a trade to bring someone in. Either way the Bruins looked a hell of a lot better in this game than they have recently. The Bruins look to snap their eight game losing streak on New Year's Day in Ottawa against the Senators. Hopefully they can win in the Ottawa Auditorium.

Vezina, Canadiens Blank Bruins on Christmas Day (12/25/24)

As expected, Boston Bruins goalie Hec Fowler won't be coming back so Art Ross will be starting Charles "Doc" Stewart in net the rest of the season. Doc is actually a licensed dentist so at least he'll have plenty of customers in the NHl. Ross signed Doc on Christmas Day to stop the bleeding in the net, good luck with that.
"Doctor Stewart at your service" - Doc

Turns out not even the new team dentist could have helped the Bruins in this Christmas Day disaster. Once again they got routed but this time it wasn't just bad defense. The Montreal Canadiens shut out the Bruins mostly due to their star goalie Georges Vezina. Vezina stopped every shot he saw from a team missing Carson Cooper and Smokey Harris. On the other side, no hat tricks were scored but Aurele Joliat scored twice and Montreal got goals from three other guys. Johnny Matz, Sprague Cleghorn and Howie Morenz all scored for Montreal as the Canadiens ran away with this one 5-0 at the Mount Royal Arena.
"Nobody can touch me!" - Vezina

The Bruins surprisingly kept the game close in the first period. Stewart was blocking away a lot of shots and they tried desperately to crack Vezina to no avail. There were only three penalties in the game but they weren't until the third period. Unfortunately for the Bruins the Canadiens scored first when Johnny Matz took a dish from Sylvio Mantha and scored with just 90 seconds left in the period. Still, going into the break down 1-0 was a huge improvement over other games.

That improvement didn't last long as the Canadiens utterly dominated the Bruins in the second period. Aurele Joliat tortured the Bruins in their previous meeting and once again he scored against them 3:30 into the period. Vezina continued to be untouchable as the Bruins failed to get one past Vezina to head into intermission down 2-0 going into the third and final period.

It was more of the same for Montreal in the third period although they took a few penalties. Billy Boucher and Mantha both took penalties but the Bruins powerplay did nothing with it. Billy Stuart of the Bruins also took a penalty but the Canadiens failed to capitalize. They did ice the game when Sprague Cleghorn scored just 80 seconds into the period to put the game out of reach. Howie Morenz set up Joliat for his second goal of the game 4:20 into the period and the Canadiens wrapped up the scoring when Matz set up Morenz with 6:40 left in the game. The Canadiens had won the game 5-0.
"Bruins can't stop me" - Joliat

Reaction:

Somehow losing 5-0 is actually an improvement over their most recent group of games. The offense couldn't touch Vezina while the defense still allowed five goals. The game was close going into the third but the Canadiens just poured it on. Not having Carson Cooper really hurts the team so Art Ross is going to have to keep searching for some help. The Bruins have lost seven straight games and there's only 22 left in the season so it may be too late to find better players. Worst part is with no formal draft, who knows how Ross is going to find some answers. Still, its just a game so no sense getting too mad about it. Gotta tip your cap to Vezina the way he played no matter what. The Bruins look to stop their seven game losing streak when they return home to play the Hamilton Tigers four games from now. Hopefully they can win at the Boston Arena. Until then, Merry Christmas everyone.

St. Patrick's Obliterate Bruins (12/22/24)

A few days ago the Boston Bruins made two trades, Art Ross sent the rights to Ernie Parkes to the Montreal Maroons for defenseman George Carroll. Ross knows this team has a huge problem on defense and has to improve it immediately or else the season will slip away. George has been playing in Moncton the last 10 years so he has experience. The other trade was yesterday Smokey Harris, one of the only guys that can score on this team was traded to the Vancouver Maroons for a bag of cash. Art Ross is sacrificing offense for defense, it better work.
                                                                     Bye bye Harris

                                                               Here to help the defense

Just like Billy Stuart, Carroll didn't do a damn thing to help the defense as the Bruins got hammered once again in tonight's game. This time it was the Toronto St. Patrick's led by Babe Dye that humiliated the Bruins so badly that Hec Fowler had enough and left the net. George Redding has to play the final two minutes in net to end the game. Why? Toronto scored TEN goals on the Bruins with Stuart and Carroll on the defensive side. Babe Dye scored FIVE goals by himself with Hap Day supplying two of his own. Bert McCaffrey, Alvin Fisher and Jack Adams all scored as well with Stan Jackson being the loan Bruin that scored. It all added up to the Bruins' sixth loss in a row 10-1 to the St. Patrick's at the Boston Arena.
Nobody in Boston wants to see this

Toronto basically ended the game in a four minute span in the first period to once again send fans to the exits early. Dye scored 4:29 into the period then Hap Day scored twice 30 seconds apart to ice the game immediately. Stan Jackson stopped the bleeding momentarily with his first goal as a Bruin assisted by George Redding 7:42 into the season but the St. Patrick's hit the dagger when Dye scored again with 26 seconds left in the period to give Toronto a 4-1 lead going into the break.
Day is all smiles in this one

The second period was an absolute drubbing by the St. Patrick's. Dye earned a hat trick with a goal 3:05 into the period then scored again seven minutes later set up by Jack Adams. Adams assisted on Bert McCaffrey's goal with 23 seconds left in the period to make it 7-1 going into intermission.
Dye is a one man wrecking crew

The third period was such a slaughter that Hec Fowler said enough was enough and left the net. Alvin Fisher scored his first goal of the season for Toronto 8:05 into the period before Adams scored just 66 seconds later. Dye scored his FIFTH goal of the game with 4:59 left in the game and that's when Fowler threw in the towel. George Redding manned the net the final two minutes and strangely Toronto didn't score to end the game with a 10-1 win.
                                                        "I quit!!!" - Fowler

Penalties:

Billy Stuart - 2 minutes

Talk about the season going down the drain early. That's six losses in a row and yet another route where the defense may as well just sit down and not move. Its one thing to be bad but its another to be THIS bad. Art Ross is doing everything he can by sending Bobby Rowe and Smokey Harris out of town for more defensemen but its not working. What Art needs is a difference maker but it may be too late this season to find one. Fowler is visibly frustrated in net and it may be time to find a different goalie if he can't handle it. Still, first year expansion teams are supposed to stink and they're doing a very good job at that. After taking a break to celebrate Christmas, the Bruins are back in action on the day after in Montreal to face the Canadiens. Mount Royal Arena may be the sight of yet another massacre, good thing Fowler won't be there to see it.

Bruins Trade Ullmark To Ottawa (6/24/24)

It was bound to happen but the Boston Bruins finally found a buyer for goalie Linus Ullmark and his $5 million dollar contract. Tonight the ...
