The Boston Bruins expansion franchise got off to a rollicking start as they defeated the Montreal Maroons in their first game in franchise history. Art Ross won his first game as head coach as his boys caught Eddie Gerard and his crew relatively napping. Chuck Dinsmore scored the first goal for Montreal 9 minutes into the first period but Smokey Harris scored the first goal in Bruins history to tie the game 3:30 into the second period. Then 9:50 into the third period Carson Cooper scored his first career NHL goal to put the Bruins on top. Hec Fowler stoned the Maroons cold the rest of the way as the Bruins won the game 2-1 over the Maroons at the Boston Arena.
Art Ross approves of the winThere were a lot of penalties to both teams but most notably Punch Broadbent of the Maroons racked up 13 penalty minutes on his own. That was more than Smokey Harris, Fern Headley and Herb Mitchell combined (4 apiece, 12 total).
Chuck Dinsmore put the Maroons on the board in the first period but Smokey Harris scored in the second period with the assist to Carson Cooper and Cooper himself scored in the third period with the assist to Fern Headley to put the Bruins up for good. Alf Skinner, Jimmy Herbert and George Redding all spent time in the penalty box as well.
It all added up as the Bruins beat the Maroons 2-1.
Good win by FowlerReaction:
Well that's the way to start the season. With only 30 games in the season, getting the first win was very helpful. Hec Fowler stopped all but one shot sent his way and the Bruins took advantage of Punch Broadbent's inability to stay out of the box. Let the records show the first goal in Bruins history was scored by Smokey Harris, the first assist goes to Carson Cooper, the first goalie win went to Hec Fowler and Art Ross won his first game as coach. The Bruins may not be the most talented team in the NHL as a first year expansion team but a win is a win. The Bruins look to make it two in a row when they travel to Toronto to play the St Patricks in two nights at Mutual Street Arena.
