Bruins Suffer First Loss To St Patricks (12/3/24)

Well it was bound to happen but the Boston Bruins suffered their first loss of the season when they got beat by the Toronto St Patrick's. They were almost singlehandedly done in by Jack Adams who scored a hat trick against Hec Fowler and the Boston defense. Another problem was penalties came back to haunt the Bruins as the St Patrick's scored not one but two powerplay goals. The Bruins didn't quit, goals by Jimmy Herbert and Lloyd Cook kept them in the game and Smokey Harris' second goal of the season cut the lead to two with 5:20 left in the third period. That's as close as they got as the St Patrick's came away with the 5-3 victory over the Bruins at Mutual Street Arena.

The St. Patrick's wasted no time getting on the board as Jack Adams scored just 45 seconds into the game to set the tone early. Babe Dye assisted on the goal but the Bruins held the St. Patrick's scoreless the rest of the period. Unfortunately they couldn't score a goal of their own as Toronto led 1-0 going into intermission.

In the second period the Bruins failed to stay out of the penalty box as Billy Stuart assisted Adams on a powerplay goal just 1:15 into the second period. The Bruins didn't go quietly as the St. Patrick's took a penalty and Carson Cooper set up Jimmy Herbert with the Bruins first ever franchise powerplay goal to cut the lead to one with 10 minutes left in the second. Two minutes later Lloyd Cook scored his first goal of the season to tie the game. Unfortunately Toronto took command as Bert McCaffrey scored a powerplay goal with 1:45 left in the second period to put the St. Patrick's back on top. That's how the period ended with Toronto ahead 3-2 as we went to break.

The St. Patrick's poured it on in the third period as Adams earned the hat trick with his third goal of the game 2:40 into the third to essentially ice the game. Three minutes later Bert Corbeau scored to make it 5-2 Leafs. The Bruins didn't give up as Alf Skinner set up Smokey Harris on a goal with 5:20 left in the game. The Bruins could get no closer as the St. Patrick's had won the game 5-3.

Reaction:

Its clear to see the combination of Herb Mitchell spending 9 minutes in the penalty box and the hat trick by Jack Adams was the key to this game. Had the Bruins stayed out of the box, they might have been successful. Instead they allowed too many goals early which allowed Toronto to sit on the lead. Eddie Powers could pretty much laugh at Bruins coach Art Ross for the incompetence on the ice. Still, its only one game and there's 28 more to go. Cook, Mitchell, Headley, Redding & Rowe need to play better if they want Fowler to play above his level. Five days from now the Bruins return home to take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Boston Arena. Hopefully Ross will have his boys ready for them.
